Cozumel - The Mexican Mayan Marvel

An hour off the shores of the Yucatan Peninsula, which itself is renowned for natural and historical wonders, Cozumel is where both Mexicans and foreigners hit the beach, snorkel or dive.

And we have to say, Cozumel's beaches are nice.

But there is a lot more to this island than white sand and dive spots.

Cozumel also has a rich history, particularly from the Mayan period. Its San Gervasio Ruins might not be as well known to us as Chichen Itza or Palenque, Cozumel was once a sacred site to which all Mayan women had to make a pilgrimage once a year.

Nowadays its most regular visitors arrive from Playa del Carmen or its cruise port. Even if you're not a diver, this is a great place to visit for the history as well as the beaches.

How to get there

Non-cruisers will likely arrive at the world famous resort of Cancun to the north, get transfers to Playa del Carmen and then take a ferry from one of two companies that have regular crossings each day.

Cruisers like us will arrive at the cruise port and either take a tour or explore it independently by taxi

How we did it

We arrived on the absolutely stunning Celebrity Beyond. While a little pricier than some of its cheaper competitors, and less family focused, we loved our time aboard this vessel.

As we were travelling during hurricane season, we broke a long-standing rule of ours and booked a tour through the cruise company.

Our Top Tips

  • If you are planning to explore the Mayan Ruins, they are in the jungle, and so you may experience issues with insects. Local bug sprays are particularly effective at warding them off.

  • Local food is high quality and very tasty. Eat from places that either your tour guide recommends or where locals gather to be sure that you will have no stomach issues. Stay clear of the water - drink mineral water or soft drinks instead.

  • Cozumel is likely to be hot. Bring plenty of sunblock with you.
