Montenegro - The Balkan Beauty in the Shadows

Montenegro is a small, mountainous Balkan country that dwells in the shadows of its much more famous and renowned neighbours. Yet, as anyone who has cruised the Adriatic down to Kotor Bay can testify, this little country packs a punch in terms of places to visit.
The Serpentine down the mountain to Kotor from Dubrovnik is absolutely not for the faint-hearted (or for the easily travel-sick) but the views of Europe’s southern-most fjord more than make up for it. This is truly a remarkable sight.
Perašt Monastery in Kotor Bay is also a deeply impressive sight.
While the Adriatic resort of Budva, seemingly prized by Russian tourists, while not quite as impressive (but them, not many places are), is also charming, with a pretty Old Town, and a great place to visit.
Montenegro may not be a name that is on most people’s lips, or on too many people's bucket lists, but it is definitely worth a visit in its own right.
How to get there

Montenegro is fast becoming a rising star for cheaper package tours, likely due to increasing costs in Croatia. Flights to the country arrive in Tivat, the capital Podgorica or even across the border in Dubrovnik.
Many Adriatic costs take passengers into Kotor Bay, which is one of the utterly unmissable highlights of this small, but proud nation.

How we did it
We took a bus tour, arranged through Viator, from Dubrovnik in Croatia. The distances weren't so great to travel, but that serpentine down to Kotor Bay is really quite something.
Our Top Tips

This tour is an excellent one to do from Dubrovnik. Allow yourself a full day for this one. Just don't attempt it if you suffer from motion-sickness, and especially not if it's hot.
Avoid Kotor and Budva in August. They will be very crowded.
Bring Euro notes if you plan to buy local souvenirs. Cash is king for smaller vendors.
