Trakai - Lithuania's Hidden Gem

Trakai Castle
Trakai Castle

Lithuania is not a nation on anyone's bucket list. Its capital Vilnius, for all its history, expansive old town and impressive architecture, is not a place Western tourists normally rush to, unless they are country-bagging backpackers.

Yet Lithuania has a real ace up its sleeve.

Less than a forty-minute train ride from Vilnius Central Station is the spectacular town of Trakai.

The former medieval capital of Lithuania, at the heart of this rural gem is the castle at the heart of Lake Galve. Without a doubt, the view of this castle is the highlight of Lithuania.

This beautifully unassuming and often overlooked Baltic nation does not deserve to be missed, just for this wonderful place alone.

We definitely recommend you add it to your Baltic itinerary.

How to get there

Trakai

Baltic cruises are a great way to visit these small, but wonderful nations. They sometimes stop in the port of Klaipeda, but this is too far away to visit Trakai. By far the best way to see this beautiful location is on a land trip from or through the current capital, Vilnius.

How we did it

We travelled through Lithuania on a combined itinerary that took us through Copenhagen in Denmark and Riga in Latvia.

Our Top Tips

  • The Baltic states are all better to see when the weather is good. Go here in late spring, summer or early autumn for the best pictures.

  • The lake and castle are a 45-60 minute walk from the station. It's a nice enough walk, but if that's too much for you, Bolt can get you there for around €50 a ride.

  • While the castle and lake are the undoubted highlights, don't ignore the town itself. It's quite pretty
